shedding 3.

My thought for the week, which will surely be a busy one.

Stillness and serenity within the eye of the storm. Less is more. Something that enhances my life as a busy, self-employed freelancer is  this: the concept of active resting or stillness within movement. If you can master, or at least engage off and on with this practice, you can double your productivity and ameliorate that frazzled feeling we all get. In the martial art of Aikido, which I have studied on and off for the past 20 years, there is a philosophy of minimum effort, maximum result. In other words, the best possible outcome is that which comes without undue effort. For every task, there is an optimum efficient route, and it’s often the lateral not logical one. It’s not that I encourage multi-tasking – I don’t. But it’s possible to be in several equally efficient states at one time.

Work fast, but don’t hurry, stay present. There is time and time expands and slows as you slow down. Pretend that it’s the most enjoyable task ever and have fun. Do not stint on the necessary things that you know you love, even if there is an all-consuming deadline looming.  So, if  you have been sitting at a desk, working cerebrally all day, and you know there is 1 hour of daylight left, go for a run. Likewise, take the 30 minutes in the middle of the day to cook and eat a healthy meal. When you are cooking your mind can release and roam, doing its best work on the subconscious levels. Ever notice how when sitting still, your mental chatter can be going like the clappers in contrast to the repose of your body? The same is true in reverse. Give yourself the gift of hardcore physical exercise as often as you can (and within your own limits.) You will encounter states of inner poise and timelessness, whilst your physical vehicle sweats and works.

Your body was made to move and groove. Enjoy it and watch your mental acuity, peace and tranquility increase. You  also need your dormancy as a deep, dark season follows one of increase and expansion. Cultivate stillness and laugh as your mind dreams up spontaneous solutions that benefit the whole. You are not just  a dancer in this, you are the dance. Continually being danced. Kind of cool, no?
